Promoting continuous improvement with data

Abstract Background
No items found

FAI has been a significant partner of KFC in developing its chicken welfare programme since 2004 and following the launch of its Western Europe Chicken Welfare Programme and Policy in 2018, the collection of broiler key welfare indicators (KWIs) has been the programme’s cornerstone.

The KWI programme manages risk, meets consumer and NGO expectations, and drives continuous improvement within the supply chain. KFC Europe’s chicken suppliers submit KWI data through FAI’s Insite platform monthly, with this equating to data for around 2 billion birds a year.

FAI’s scientific, technical, and data expertise ensures KFC is collecting the right metrics to manage risk and assess welfare. The KWIs are designed for large-scale commercial supply chains and aligned with relevant industry frameworks (e.g. International Poultry Welfare Alliance and European Chicken Commitment).

The powerful Insite platform allows simple and secure submission of supplier data sets and automated data checks before our team of subject matter experts provide commentary and analysis alongside interactive dashboards and scorecards.

FAI is a specialist in global animal-based production systems with years of experience handling large commercial data sets generated within agri-supply chains. Our combined data collection, analysis expertise and scientific rigor means KFC’s suppliers are submitting meaningful, standardised and comparable data.

Regular analysis and reporting, focused on driving continuous improvement in animal welfare, allows KFC to:

Understand the differences in welfare performance across suppliers, countries and regions

Produce supplier scorecards to support procurement and technical teams

Share data back with suppliers in a way that adds value through anonymous benchmarking

Understand compliance with KFC standards and policies

Track progress on commitments

Identify and proactively manage risk

Communicate progress externally (complying with NGO expectations).

The programme has been designed to engage suppliers through anonymous benchmarking against their peers, regular welfare review sessions, and joint action planning.

In 2025, in conjunction with the KFC team, we piloted a new process to provide targeted support. Called Hypercare, the process will be used when supplier benchmarking identifies suppliers with challenges on important KWIs. Hypercare consists of a consultative, bespoke, supplier visit designed to help identify the root causes of issues, advice and recommendations for improvement, and agreeing an action plan to address these issues.

FAI's expert data management has transformed how we engage our suppliers in our continuous improvement cycle of the Chicken Welfare Programme. FAI's ability to translate complex welfare data into actionable insights is the backbone of our continuous improvement model. Thanks to FAI, we’re not just measuring progress, we’re driving it.
